Life of Pie
I had every intention of starting off with a comment about this Thanksgiving food we've just been gorging ourselves on, then segueing somehow to the LIFE OF PI movie that's coming out.
It seemed a bit forced, though, so I'll just leave the original title of this post and let you fill in the apophatic blanks, then move right on to the real reason I'm writing; which is to show you a short television interview between Life of Pi author Yann Martel, and Randall Mark -- former professor at my alma mater, and facilitator/elder/whatever at this church(ish) thing I used to attend in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

It's only words and you're obviously pissed about something, but I'd appreciate it -- if you're going to leave off-topic, angry rants -- if you'll just keep the profanity down to maybe two or three dark words :)
But to answer the non-specific, slant-directional argument of your comment... I don't think there's much in the fossil record to indicate that Neanderthals practiced blood-sacrifice.
Furthermore, it's a bit too easy, don't you think, to harshly critique a two-thousand year-old culture from the vantage point of your own? Besides, we kill millions of animals every year without a thought for their deaths. What's so bad about having a ceremony, and imbuing those deaths with some significance?
I wouldn't argue for the re-institution of something like that, but I imagine blood sacrifice to be something like that scene in the movie COLD MOUNTAIN, where that woman kills the goat. Something can be done for archaic or practical cultural reasons that we no longer have the context to understand, but that doesn't give us the right to sit in judgment on the people who do it.
I know I'm giving far too much attention to what was most likely just a flippant comment, sparked by your anger over some sort of power-abuse in a church you attended as a child, but you're the one who came on here and threw your bucket of offal all over something that means a great deal to me. Cheers.
I admire your impulse to avoid censorship and champion freedom of expression, but I, for one, would be on the side of protecting your readers from having to read flames that are intentionally obscene and express hate for any race or creed or religion.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, Life of Pie is a good book with some brilliant passages, but I wasn't blown away by it. Have you read it? What did you think?

ReplyDeleteTo answer your question... I read and enjoyed it, but it was quite a while ago, and I don't really remember enough to comment in any detailed way.
Film studios (or the distribution companies) have strange release dates; I would love to sit in on their decision process meeting when determining schedules. I say this because "Midnight Children" also is in theaters and it too is adapted from a well-known book and both feature young East-Indian boys coming of age. Maybe the release dates have something with timing exposure and publicity campaigns for the Golden Globes / Oscars. Hmm.
