the flip side

Having recently been raked over the coals by health care costs, I feel like raging against the Insurance Corporation Machine. But since I have committed myself to struggling to see the how things look from the other side, I would like to offer two reasons why, I think, I should not be directing all my ire at the weasel-monkeys who are getting rich off my ailments. First, because they are trying to cover health costs in a country where most people think medicine is a magic wand that can at any time erase a lifetime of bad choices. And second, because there are a lot of people out there who go to the doctor every time they stub their toe. I'm sure it's way more complicated than I'm making it, but I'm just trying to acknowledge that systemic problems are created and sustained by all parts of the system. Including, I suppose, me.

  1. I suppose you live in America? I'm so glad I don't have to take out insurance or anything, it really helps getting free check ups and prescriptions and hospital visits. I don't think I'd ever leave this country. I'm from the U.K. It sucks that you have to pay so much.

  2. Way to rub it in, Louise :)

I'm a dual citizen and used to live in Canada, so I do definitely miss the socialized medicine.

  3. Aww I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset you Josh. :(

Yea it's one of the benefits I think in the Commonwealth, some of the countries do have it and it may cost a lot but there's nothing like not having to worry about paying for treatment.

I hope your bills aren't for anything too serious?

  4. Nah, I'm just bellyaching because of what seems like a pretty poor return on investment. The house always wins, even when I get sick. Still I'm relatively wealthy and I've generally got great health. Just another whiny rich guy, I guess.
